Service Hours Oppurtunity

Hello! It’s almost time for Habitat for Humanity’s HOLIDAY GIFT WRAPPING at Market Place Mall in Champaign! Starting the first weekend in December we have shifts all the way up to Christmas Eve!
This event is a great way for Habitat to get its name out in the community, as well as raise some much needed funds to go towards home builds in 2013.
The main task, obviously, is to wrap shopper’s gifts for a donation.
We need a lot of volunteers to help us make this a fun and successful fundraiser…and that’s where you come in!
Below are the dates/times available for volunteering.
To schedule you (or your group’s) date and shift, please contact me, Kim Gollings,  at 217-819-5110 oroutreach@cuhabitat.org
Tis the season of giving and I get to see firsthand how something as easy as wrapping a gift makes the difference in the lives of families in our community!
Happy Holidays,
Kim

Service Hours Oppurtunity

Mary Sheldon at St. Matthews is looking for 11 actors who won't have to do much. There is no dialogue for them to learn.   Fr. Lampitt has already agreed to allow this project to count for service hours.  The actors would only have to attend one brief rehearsal next Sunday at St. Matt's at 12:00 noon, then appear in the program at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday October 28th.  They only have to appear briefly, individually,  as the following saints:

St. Nicholas
St. Matthew
St. Francis
St. Clare
St. Martin De Porres
Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha
Saint Therese of Liseux
St. Bernadette
Padre Pio
Mother Theresa
2 extras

This could be a fun project, and would really help out our CCD program.  Please help us by trying to interest some students.  They can reach me, Mary Shelden, at maryshelden@gmail.com or call me at 217-621-0841 or call Mary Hazen at St. Matthew church and leave their name and contact info, and we will get back to them.  The actual production will take less than a half an hour.  Easy peasy.

Here is something that might spark your interest...a Bible Scholar claims to have a small papyrus scroll that "claims" Jesus had a wife...interesting, but not sure how "real" it is as it seems they are missing key parts of the scroll that would help understand the context and other writings on the scroll. Enjoy the article below!

Writing Format (both Sophomore and Freshman) for Final Essay (Narnia & St. Thomas More) - Writing Format!!!

Student's Questions and fun topics!
What to wear to Mass?

This has been asked in class so hear is (hopefully) an answer! Why are there not any miracles today like in the Bible?

Do animals have souls?

Where do animals go (video)?

"Who" Goes to Heaven?
"God's plan for salvation embraces those also who acknowledge the Creator. Among those are especially the Mohammedans; they profess their faith as the faith of Abraham, and with us they worship the one, merciful God who will judge men on the last day. God himself is not far from those others who seek the unknown God in darkness and shadows, for it is he who gives to all men life and inspiration and all things, and who as Savior desires all men to be saved. Eternal Salvation is open to those who, through no fault of their own, do not know Christ and His Church but seek God with a sincere heart, and under the inspiration of grace try in their lives to do his will, made known to them by the dictates of their conscience. Nor does Divine Providence deny the aids necessary for salvation to those who, without blame on their part, have not yet reached an explicit belief in God, but strive to lead a good life, under the influence of God's grace."

The Sophomore Theology Study Guide to come...

April 25th is the Feast of St. George (Patron Saint of England & Soldiers) and some interesting happenings that we can apply today! (All from : http://www.catholicvote.org/discuss/index.php?p=29352)
When St. George happened upon the townsfolk of Silene, they were, to put it mildly, up to no good. A pesky dragon had parked himself on the city’s water supply, and—in an attempt to lure him elsewhere—the people were offering him a tasty young maiden for a midday treat. St. George, however, didn’t lash out at the sacrificing mob. He knew most were well-intentioned people, frightened and misguided, trying to keep their families alive. The real problem was the dragon. And the dragon, not the people, is the one he attacked.

Before doing battle with the dastardly dragon, St. George did two things. First, he prayed. Then he set aside his sword, picking up a lance instead. The first was more important, but the second mattered still. After all, George didn’t just need a weapon; he needed the right weapon—something long and deadly that could pierce the dragon’s scaly flesh from a safe distance. A sword wouldn’t do.

And this more for the parents, but also the students as well from Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York (http://blog.archny.org/?p=2470)
"Sound familiar?  We Catholics have known this for years:  there is no more tried-and-true way of passing on our Catholic faith to our kids than by sacrificing to put them in a Catholic school.  Data proves they persevere in the faith at higher rates, pray better, are more faithful to Sunday Mass, live gospel values, are more generous to their parish, even have happier marriages, volunteer more, and transmit the faith to their own children, than those not in a Catholic school.
In our nation’s history, Catholic schools had two goals:  to educate excellently, and to form children in the faith.  Both are essential.
I recently had the pleasure of meeting with leaders in our Catholic high schools.  They observed that, in some of their areas, the public schools were, thank God, offering a good education.  Lord knows, they remarked, their facilities, and the frills in the government schools, were more dazzling than the Catholic high schools.
So, they asserted, there was only one reason for a parent to sacrifice financially to send his/her son/daughter to the Catholic high school:  formation in faith, values, character, discipline, and religion . . . along with a first class education.
In other words, Catholic identity is a priority.
If our schools are not visibly and robustly Catholic, let’s save a lot of money and close them in areas where our children can get a decent academic education free of charge."

Enjoy!

Freshman Theology Essays and Peter & Paul Power Point

The Essays on the Passion will be handed back on Monday April 16, 2012 - re-writes will be due the following Monday April 23rd. Here is some general feedback which will be discussed more in class.
  • The essays overall were well written and very inspiring!
  • Good examples and explanations of the topics - make sure to give specific movie scenes so the reader can "see" what you are writing and when they watch it will be reminded of what you wrote about
  • Make sure to follow the Writing Format!!!; Check Spelling; 2 Bible Verses connected to what you are writing about
  • Follow the Assignment requirements: Introduction paragraph; 2 topic paragraphs (Good vs. Evil, Character Analysis, Jesus), Personal Reflection, and a Summary
  • The Passion of the Christ needs to be italicized when referring to the movie
  • Again - overall well done and inspiring - don't forget the impact it had on you and share that with others!

Here is the Power Point on Peter and Paul that will be discussed in class Monday April 16th.

The Study Guide for the test on Friday over Jesus' Death &; Resurrection and the Book of Acts will be here on the blog on Tuesday (17th).

Any Questions please see Mr. Schreder!

Enjoy this video when looking over the Power Point on Peter and Paul!

Freshman Theology:
Please watch the two following videos by Wednesday April 18th and answer the following questions  - typed out. Please follow the format - see example here.

Fr. Barron on Jesus' Ascension

1. What was the ancient Jewish "belief" of the "interaction" of Heaven and Earth?

2. How does this belief "fit" with Jesus and Salvation?

3. What "happened" at Jesus' Ascension (with Heaven and Earth)?

4. What do we have today that represents the interaction of Heaven and Earth as seen at Jesus' Ascension?

Fr. Barron on St. Paul and the Life of the Church

5. Who were the four people that Fr. Barron mentions did not keep their faith private, but spoke only about it?

6. What effect does this have on us today?

7. Who are "Apostles" and how can we be like St. Paul?

If there are any questions please let Mr. Schreder know!
