Final Exams, Lady Sabers, Merry Christmas!

I hope everyone enjoyed the extra day for Christmas Break! Final Day of Exams will take place on January 5th, 2009 when we come back. For students needing materials to study the school will be open Monday December 22nd from 7-9 AM. I will be at school during that time until 10:30, if any students have any questions or need to see me for anything.

On Saturday December 20th, the Lady Sabers took on Regina Dominican from Chicago. The JV girls started things off with a bang defeating the visitors 41-37. Taylor Alexander hit a 3 point shot as time expired to send the game into OT. The two teams were still tied after the first OT and Taylor hit the shot to put the Sabers up for good in the 2 OT. The Varsity Sabers improved to 11-1 overcoming a sluggish start to the second half, making huge free throws down the stretch!

I hope everyone and their families have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Happy Birthday Baby Jesus!

Feast of St. Nicholas

The absence of the “hard facts” of history is not necessarily an obstacle to the popularity of saints, as the devotion to St. Nicholas shows. Both the Eastern and Western Churches honor him, and it is claimed that, after the Blessed Virgin, he is the saint most pictured by Christian artists. And yet, historically, we can pinpoint only the fact that Nicholas was the fourth-century bishop of Myra, a city in Lycia, a province of Asia Minor.

As with many of the saints, however, we are able to capture the relationship which Nicholas had with God through the admiration which Christians have had for him—an admiration expressed in the colorful stories which have been told and retold through the centuries.

Perhaps the best-known story about Nicholas concerns his charity toward a poor man who was unable to provide dowries for his three daughters of marriageable age. Rather than see them forced into prostitution, Nicholas secretly tossed a bag of gold through the poor man’s window on three separate occasions, thus enabling the daughters to be married. Over the centuries, this particular legend evolved into the custom of gift-giving on the saint’s feast. In the English-speaking countries, St. Nicholas became, by a twist of the tongue, Santa Claus—further expanding the example of generosity portrayed by this holy bishop.

Advent: The time of waiting and preparation

Pope Benedict XVI presided at first Vespers for the First Sunday of Advent. The Pope’s homily focused on Advent as the spiritual season of hope "par excellence."

"During that time," the Holy Father said, "the entire Church is called to become hope, for herself and for the world. ... All the people of God resume their journey, attracted by this mystery: that our God is the 'God Who comes' and calls us to come out and meet Him, ... first and foremost in that universal form of hope and expectation which is prayer."

This cry for the Lord to come speedily can be heard from "all the just, of all those who wish to resist evil and the enticements of iniquitous wellbeing, of pleasures offensive to human dignity and to the condition of the poor," the Holy Father said.

In praying the Psalms, "the Church relives the grace of this compassion, of this 'coming' of the Son of God into human anguish until touching its very depths. The cry of hope of Advent expresses ... all the gravity of our condition, our extreme need for salvation."

December!

Welcome back students! It's December and with that came some nasty weather this morning. Hopefully students who made it to school are safe and sound. Yesterday was the beginning of the season of Advent-the real reason for the Christmas Season: The Birth of Our Lord Jesus Christ! Fr. Mark at St. Matthews had a great homily on the "waiting" aspect of Jesus' birth and coming again. I love the Christmas Season because of all the giving, sharing, and care people have for one another (too bad we can't do it year round). I especially enjoy the Christmas Music! WBGL 91.7 has all day Christmas music so there is always a good song on the radio!

And with December comes the end of the quarter and semester! Semester Exams are December 17-19 with the last day of instruction being on Tuesday Dec 16th. They are approaching quickly. Here are some important dates for all classes:
Algebra: Quiz 12/4, Test (Ch 6) 12/11
Intermediate Algebra: Quiz 12/4, Test (Ch 5) 12/11
Statistics: Quiz 12/5, Final Project 12/15

Algebra Final and the Lady Sabers

In December, Mr. Schreder will be holding a review session on Wednesday Mornings in December for his Algebra I students who would like to start studying and reviewing for the semester final. We will go over key concepts and formulas that the students have learned and what they will need to know to do well on the final. These sessions will start at 7:20 in Mr. Schreder's room and will be go over important topics as well as answer any questions the students may have (questions should be on specific concepts and formulas, graphing, or how to sovle a problem and not on number of questions on the test or how many etc., this will be discussed as the final approaches).

The Lady Saber's basketball team is off to a 3-1 start after defeating Monticello and Tuscola Thursday and Friday night, before falling to Urbana in a hard fought contest 38-37. The Sabers look to rebound against Rantoul on Monday (5:15) and Danville Tuesday (8:15) before heading into the Thanksgiving break. The Sabers are competing in the Blue Star Country Classic, headlined by the games on Saturday at Parkland College: Bollingbrook (IL) vs. Ben Davis (IN) and Heritage Christian (IN) vs. Rufus King (WI). Those games were intense and the competition fierce as many of the girls from those schools will be going on to show their talent among many of the big name Division 1 Schools next fall. Come out and support the Lady Sabers as they attempt to get back on a wining streak!

Daily Psalms Reading

Psalms 19:7-11
From one end of the heavens it comes forth; its course runs through to the other; nothing escapes its heat.
8
The law of the LORD is perfect, refreshing the soul. The decree of the LORD is trustworthy, giving wisdom to the simple.
9
The precepts of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart. The command of the LORD is clear, enlightening the eye.
10
The fear of the LORD is pure, enduring forever. The statutes of the LORD are true, all of them just;
11
More desirable than gold, than a hoard of purest gold, Sweeter also than honey or drippings from the comb.

Middle of November

I can't believe it's already the middle of November. Only 2 weeks until Turkey Day!
The results are in from the 2008 STM Election-John McCain defeated Barack Obama 127-83. The results were interesting, but it didn't turn out quite like the real election...

Statistics will be using the various pieces of information found from the election and organizing it for a project that is due Monday November 12th.

I hope everyone enjoyed the day off yesterday-give thanks to a Veteran when you see one!

Monday, November 3, 2008

Welcome to November!

I hope everyone enjoyed the 3.5 Day weekend! I enjoyed getting to meet many parents at parent-teacher conferences last Thursday! Halloween was a lot of fun and I hope everyone got their fill of chocolate and candy! We have only 2 weeks until the Mid-Quarter for the 2nd Quarter! The school year is definitely going by very fast-don't let it pass you by. Basketball practice starts today for the Woman's Basketball Team here at STM. Congrats to the Saber Volleyballers on their first ever Regional Championship! Good year to the Football Team who finished at 6-4 with a trip to the playoffs. Baking Fun!

Last week I made a challenge/deal with both of my Algbera classes. If the class earned a B- average on Chapter 4.1-4.3 Test, which was on Friday (10/24) then I would bake cookies for the class for Halloween. And the results are...5B was able to reach that goal (and went above and beyond a B-). So here are some hard evidence that Mr. Schreder actually did bake the cookies and not go out and buy them at the store!

Whole-Wheat Oatmeal Peanut Butter and Chocalate Chip Cookies (Halloween Theme)!

Enjoy the 3.5 Day Weekend! I look forward to meeting parents at Parent-Teacher Conferences and don't eat too much Candy on Halloween! Happy All Saint's Day!

Remembering 9/11/01

Loving God, help us to realize that true peacemaking can only become a reality in our world today if it is first a matter in our hearts. September 11 reminded us that our country has been blessed with tremendous resources that we must use wisely in the service of others, both within our own borders and around the world.

We ask for the gifts of civility and charity so that we can treat others with respect and love.

We ask for the gifts of faith and hope to strengthen our spirits by placing our trust in You rather than ourselves.

We ask for the gifts of courage and compassion that will move us into action to help those in need in the United States as well as throughout the world. We ask for the gifts of humility and kindness so that we may put the needs and interests of others ahead of our own.

We ask for the gifts of patience and perseverance to endure the long struggle for justice.

We ask for all of this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Where did the weekend go?

My thoughts exactly! The weekend flew by, but it was peaceful and relaxing. My brothers and mother came and two of my brothers and I watched the Illini dominate their rivals south of I-57 Eastern Illinois Panthers 47-21. My mother and fiancee went Wedding Dress Shopping-the guys did their manly thing by enjoying some college football and the women well they did whatever women do dress shopping.

I hope everyone else had a pleasant weekend. Congrats to the STM Footballing Panthers on their 41-0 romp of Schlarman on Friday Night.
